The difference between llamas and alpacas seems subtle till you compare them side-by-side.

Their size difference can be deceiving because some llamas are on the small side and some alpacas are on the large side. Alpacas typically weigh 100 – 200 lbs while llamas weigh 300 – 500 lbs and are significantly taller.

The easiest way to tell is by comparing the ears and the placement of the tail.

EARS

Llamas have longer ears that sit forward on their heads. They are also banana-shaped with rounded tips. Alpacas have shorter, straight, pointed ears that sit further back on their heads.

TAILS

Alpacas’ backends are more curved, so their tails sit lower than llamas do. Llamas’ backs stay basically straight back to the base of their tails making their tails sit higher than alpacas.

Now you know!
